November Event
How to Grow or Expand Your Turnaround Business
David Grimes, president of TMA Nevada, started the program by introducing the moderator and panel. Attorney Jann Chubb, partner at Armstrong Teasdale, moderated the discussion with the panel consisting of Geoff Berman, vice president with Development Specialists, Inc. who is also president of the American Bankruptcy Institute; attorney Greg Garman, managing shareholder of Gordon Silver, who specializes in business restructuring and bankruptcy; and Ted Burr managing principal of the Sierra Consulting Group with offices in Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
Chubb opened the discussion by asking the panel, "How did you get started in the turnaround business and "What do you do to generate business?" She also asked, "Do you advertise and have a budget for marketing?" Ted Burr started by speaking about his background beginning his career with a large international law firm, then starting his own firm in corporate restructuring mainly in the small business market. He is also a certified turnaround professional. Greg Garman spoke of concentrating on commercial and corporate bankruptcy and restructuring mostly representing the debtor's side. Geoff Berman's experience is in the extension of secured and unsecured credit and liquidation.
All agreed that networking is the key to getting new business. You must market yourself as well as your firm. Find a common denominator with people and use it to your advantage to form relationships. To the old adage, "it's not what you know - it's who you know." Different forums for such were discussed such as belonging to professional associations as a means for generating business. Maintain a rolodex of core specialists that you use -- they in turn, will refer business to you. Another example is to anticipate businesses which may need your help in the future and cultivate a dialogue with them now.
The panel agreed that the marketing budget should be used for a variety of efforts: advertising in industry journals, attend/exhibit at trade shows (it is very important to send the right people from your firm), go to conferences, do dinners, play golf with people who can send business your way.
To end the discussion Chubb asked, "Why join TMA?" The consensus from the panel was that the organization affords the opportunity to meet allied professionals from all over the world through its programs and benefits and thus serves as a great referral source.
At this time Chubb asked for questions from the audience and a lively discussion followed.
December Event
2011 Holiday Party
On December 7, TMA Nevada held its annual holiday party. We gathered at Spanish Trail Country Club and enjoyed sumptuous appetizers and cocktails with the compliments of our event sponsors and TMA Nevada.
The event was very well attended, and true to the organization's pedigree, members and guests connected in that special way that TMA Nevada affords.
TMA Nevada President, Dave Grimes welcomed the crowd and spoke of the 2012 program schedule. In January we kick off with a special Nevada Governor's panel, "The State of Nevada: State Initiatives for Local Growth and Job Creation." In February the program will be "Challenges of Nevada's Home Owners Associations." Later in the year the programs will include "The Turnaround of Downtown" and also "The Turnaround of the Miracle Mile Shops." President's Letter
From David Grimes to TMA Members and Friends
Welcome to 2012!
Personally, I am excited about what the New Year has to offer and I hope you share my enthusiasm for the inevitable challenges and opportunities we will face. To get us started on this journey, TMA of Nevada's program on January 25 is devoted to providing insight into the prospects for the Nevada and Las Vegas economies. As highlighted elsewhere in The Workout, we have an excellent panel arranged and I am excited about the program. In addition to your participation, I encourage you to invite colleagues so they too can benefit from this event.
